British Orchard Nursery the First Pre-School to receive the Dubai Quality Awards

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 04 June 2014 – British Orchard Nursery was one of Dubai’s top performers who were honoured on Monday 2nd June for their outstanding pursuit of excellence. H. H Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai along with H. H Shekh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, crown prince of Dubai and H. H. Participants from the Ministry of Education’s School Leadership Programme put Theory into Practice at Workshop

Dubai School Experiences Best Practice in Teacher Leadership
Dubai, UAE, 8 May 2014 – Educators engaged in the UAE Ministry of Education’s school leadership programme have heard from teacher professional development experts at an event held at Jumeriah English Speaking School (JESS). The participants of the School Leadership Programme (SLP) came from across the Emirates to witness international best practice in teacher leadership. The event provided SLP learners with an excellent example of how a high-performing school operates on a day to day level.
Participants also took part in a forum led by a number of education specialists, including representatives of the world’s largest learning company, Pearson.  Amanda Collins, Pearson’s Professional Development Director in the region, said the event provided a unique opportunity for programme participants to see first-hand how the theory they had learnt throughout the multi-dimensional school improvement programme could be applied in real-life classroom and administrative scenarios.
“A key focus of the School Leadership Programme, which is a joint initiative of Pearson and the UAE Government, is to provide a highly engaging and hands-on professional learning experience for the Emirates’ existing and future school leaders. Our research has shown that the most effective school leadership programmes are those that make practical learning a priority. In order to engage in critical inquiry and reflection, leaders need multiple opportunities to observe powerful, effective practice in action”.
A number of education specialists presented at the event, including Pearson’s Global Head of Direct Delivery, Steven Guttentag; JESS Director, Robert Stokoe; JESS Head Teacher, Ruth Burke; CEO of Taleem, Dr Samia Al Farra and CEO of the Indian High School, Dr Ashok Kumar.
Ms Collins said the event was a great opportunity to emphasise the importance of school leadership to the futures of learners currently in the UAE school system:
“A 2010 report by McKinsey and Company, and co-authored by Pearson’s Chief Education Strategist, Sir Michael Barber, found that good schools depend on good leaders. Capturing the Leadership Premium, which contained an international review of school leadership practices from some of the world’s leading education systems, found that aside from classroom practices which promote strong learner outcomes, nothing has a bigger impact on improving school standards than leadership. So if we are serious about improving learner outcomes in the UAE – which we are – we need to enhance leadership practice.”
The research contained in the Capturing the Leadership Premium drew on the resources of Britain’s National College for Leadership of Schools (NCLS), the organisation that has also been responsible for developing course resources for the MOE’s school leadership programme. Launched in 2013, the UAE School Leadership Programme, a flagship initiative of the UAE Government’s education reform agenda, will serve more than 700 Emirati educators, principals and administrators over the next five years.

UAE Ministry of Education Successfully Holds Preliminary Round of Girls Swimming Championship of 2nd School Olympics

Ministry provides highly supportive environment for athletically gifted students
UAE, April 27, 2014 – The UAE Ministry of Education successfully will host today (Monday 28 April 2014) the preliminary round of the girls swimming championship for the 2ndSchool Olympics. The event will be held at the RAK Educational Swimming Pool Hall, included the participation of 72 female students from the 9 to 12 year-old range; coming from Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and East Sharjah. The girls swimming championship featured categories like the 25-meter freestyle competitions, 25 meters back and the 4 × 25-meter freestyle.

Supervised by Amina Al-Sakab, Head of Environment and School Activities Department, Ras Al Khaimah Educational District, said: “The project is a ‘dream’ event that is expected to teach our young athletes on the importance of practicing excellent sportsmanship and honing their ability to compete with the strongest-preparing them to win Olympic International medals in the future. Our students at Ras Al Khaimah are steady and ready for contributing in the success of the swimming championships.”
Sumaya Abdullah Harib Al Suwaidi, Director of Ras Al Khaimah Educational District, stressed on the significance of the School Olympics, a program that was implemented across the public school sector last year. She noted that the program is one of the most important initiatives that began with the blessing and the embodiment of the government vision and was made even stronger with the MoE’s support for the project.
Al Suwaidi said: “The School Olympics program is considered to be one of the pioneering initiatives that we hope to achieve positive results in the regional and international sports forums. The first edition of the School Olympics held last year, saw successful efforts of all those who worked in terms of organization and supervision of the project, especially in light of the circumstances that accompanied the launch of the Olympics.”
Meanwhile, the Boys swimming championship will kick off on Tuesday (April 29, 2014) in Dubai Educational Zone and will be hosted by Al Wasl Sports Club. The Boys category will include 25 meters freestyle, 25 meters back and relay 4 × 25 meters.

American Curriculum Schools in Arab Region Adapt to New US Science Education Standards

Gulf Educators Embrace New American School Science Standards
   
Dubai, UAE, 28 April 2014 – Educators from American curriculum schools across the region have gathered in Dubai to learn how new standards governing science education in the US will impact on the learning outcomes of their students.
In April 2013, the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) were released in all American states, with the goal of providing students with an internationally benchmarked science education. The NGSS have had a profound impact in schools across the United States, which up until the release of the NGSS were governed by science specifications dictated by individual state education ministries.
American curriculum schools across the Arab world have been implementing the standards over recent months, a process which has been demanding at times for teachers and principals. The goal of the Dubai event, which was led by developers of the NGSS, was to provide these educators with professional development training designed to maximise the benefits of the NGSS and ensure schools undergo a smooth transition to the new curriculum.
The NGSS were designed to not only foster consistency across all American schools, but to ensure the American science curriculum is up-to-date with the most recent innovations and discoveries in the rapidly changing fields of science and technology. The standards were developed after concerns in the US that the science curriculum was failing to keep pace with the demands of a modern, globally-orientated workforce. Effective science education has been linked to America’s ability to foster an educated society and retain a competitive edge across a range of industries. A 2007 Carnegie Foundation Commission report that was an impetus for the reforms concluded that the country’s “capacity to innovate for economic growth and the ability for American workers to thrive in the modern workforce depend on a broad foundation of math and science”.
Participants at the Dubai event which was held at the American Collegiate school, were told of the important role science education would play in securing the long-term economic future of the Arab region. Karim Daoud, Managing Director of Pearson Middle East, a sponsor of the event said:

School Olympics 2014 UAE

School Olympics 2014 starts with preliminary tournament for the athletics and artistic gymnastics championship
UAE, April, 22, 2014 – The preliminary competition of the 2nd School Olympics resumed today, (Tuesday, April 22, 2014), with the staging of the Athletics Championship for Boys held after the launching of the Girls Athletics Championship in Sharjah yesterday (April 21, 2014). The School Olympics aims to consolidate the principles of Olympics and sports while promoting the spirit of challenge, excellence, and fair competition amongst UAE students. Today’s event included track and field competitions.
Organizers are also all geared up for the artistic gymnastics championship to be held on Wednesday, April 23 2014, in Eastern Sharjah for girls and on Thursday, April 24 2014, in Fujairah for boys. The contenders will compete with each other to demonstrate their strength, flexibility, and speed during the competitions which will cover the performance of chains movements in all devices.
Hassan Lootah, Director of Physical Education at the Ministry of Education and Head of the Educational Zones Committee handling the School Olympics, expressed happiness over a big number of students participating in this year’s athletics tournament preliminaries for boys and girls. He said the second edition of the School Olympics aims to attract and encourage promising talents to improve their athletic performance. It also serves as an ideal platform for the UAE to discover great athletes who will represent the country in future international tournaments.
Lootah said: “The completion of all the necessary preparations for the success of the School Olympics provides a solid base to lay the foundation for school sports as well as promote physical fitness and physical health among students. These are all in line with the Strategic Plan of the Ministry of Education to create a stimulating environment in schools.”
The final competitions, which are scheduled to be held in Dubai, will include mandatory games and optional games. Mandatory games include athletic games, artistic gymnastics, and swimming, while optional games cover fencing, archery, and bow and arrow. The School Olympics is considered the first step towards selecting and discovering the willingness and abilities of the best talented students who excel in sports in hopes of encouraging them to play for national sports teams.

Second Edition of ‘School Olympics’ Sends Strong Message from Young Generation

UAE, April 14, 2014 – The first national qualifying rounds of the second edition of the School Olympics start today (Monday, April 14, 2014) and will extend until April 29, 2014. The final phase will be held next month at the Dubai Police Officers Club. Sports competitions for girls aged 13 to 14 are currently being staged at various educational zones as follows: archery at the Ajman Education Zone, shooting at the Al Dhaid Cultural & Sports Club, and fencing at ABN Model School.
Generation – Building
The School Olympics is considered one of the most important programs launched by the government in support of school activities that enhance the level of physical and technical skills of students.  This project  builds on the vision of H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the National Olympic Committee and Chairman of the Supreme Committee for the Olympic Games, to champion the essence of National Sports – the youth.
The holding of various sports and physical fitness activities across the entire country and the emphasis of their importance helps ensure the formation of a generation capable of representing the state in all regional and international competitions and proudly raising
the country’s flag on the winners’ podiums.
Desired Objectives
The Executive Office of the Olympics headed by H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum aims to achieve the various objectives behind the establishment of the program, such as the selection of sporting talents and the full development of student abilities through the fostering of values upholding sporting and Olympic principles. The Office also wants to inculcate a love for fair competition, to identify and address challenges, and to promote and support the role of school sports in harnessing the full potential of youths. It is currently drawing greater awareness on the importance of adopting a culture of sports to maintain overall health and fitness.
Organization and Arrangement
The Team in charge of the Olympics continues to oversee the last phase of the event to ensure that the venues are in order and fully capable of hosting the finals. The deciding matches are opportunities for students from around the country to give their best and deliver excellent performances.

Over Half a Million UAE Students Could Compete to Qualify for International History Olympiad 2015

The International History Bee and Bowl (IHBB) kicks off in UAE on 26 April as part of International Competition
Dubai, UAE, 9 March 2014 – Following Japan, China, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, England, France and others, The International History Bee and Bowl (IHBB) has added the UAE to the tour that covers Asia, Europe, and the USA.
Top students and teams from UAE schools will have an opportunity to participate in the regional leg of the IHBB that is being organized by Carian College Advisors, which aim to attract the most talented students from across the country to the competition.
“We are targeting over half a million students from private and public schools in the UAE to compete in this competition”, said Peter Davos, IHBB Director of Outreach – Middle East, and Managing Director, Carian College Advisors. “UAE students who excel in the competition will stand a chance to qualify for the Asian Championships this Spring and the inaugural International History Olympiad to be held in the summer of 2015.”
The competition owes its origins to David Madden, founder and Executive Director of the National and International History Bees and Bowls. With 19 consecutive wins on the US television quiz show ‘Jeopardy’, David holds the title as the second longest-winning contestant in the show’s history. With winnings in excess of USD 400,000, David went on to create the highly successful organizations, which last year held over 170 competitions in the US alone. 
The competition hopes to attract participants from more than 30 schools in the UAE, to be added to the thousands of participants from countries such as South Korea, China, Thailand, and Malaysia, with future stops planned in Singapore, Sri Lanka, England, Germany, Switzerland and France. Guests of honor and lead judges for the April 26 event will include Radio Jockey Malavika Vardhan of City 1016, host of Dubai’s top listened to breakfast show, and Omar Nour, champion triathlete and Olympic hopeful, who recently placed second in the Yas triathlon this past weekend.
”IHBB and Carian College Advisors are thrilled to be launching our history quiz tournaments in the UAE, and we look forward to giving students a new opportunity to get excited about studying history. Students around the world have enjoyed competing in the International History Bee and Bowl, and we know that students in the U.A.E. will also have a great time putting their history skills to use in a fast-paced buzzer quiz competition.”
According to statistics from Abu Dhabi Education Council and Knowledge & Human Development Authority in Dubai, there are 200,000 students in Abu Dhabi private schools and 225,000 in Dubai private schools, in addition to students in public schools of both emirates. All public and private schools across the UAE can enter with teams in three separate age divisions. The top half of students and teams will also qualify for the inaugural Asian Championships at the end of the school year.
The international competition, which will hold approximately 12-15 regional tournaments throughout Asia, is seeking to use the upcoming April tournament in Dubai as its showcase competition in the Middle East this year, supported by strong enrollments from across the country. The competitions will take place on Apr 26 over the course of a full day at GEMS Winchester School in Jebel Ali.
Peter Davos, who studied History at Oxford and also hold degrees from Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, and the London School of Economics, commented: “We have selected the UAE as the launch pad because of the tremendous response from its student community and we expect a winning team from the UAE to finish very strongly at both the Asian and global finals.”
“This competition will allow students the opportunity to demonstrate their in-depth understanding of global history, from antiquity to the present day. UAE students are well versed in history, due to the breadth and diversity of local school curricula and their multicultural background. This will also challenge participants to interact with bright history students from other educational institutions from across the country, to see who is truly the best.”
IHBB currently consist of three divisions – Asia, Europe, and USA, with Australia, New Zealand, and South African divisions planned to debut in Summer of 2014 as well. IHBB is looking forward to 12-15 qualifying tournaments in Asia and 6-8 tournaments in Europe this year.  The 2014 European Championships will then be held in Rome, and the inaugural Asian Championships in Hong Kong at the end of the school year. Students who do well in the competition in Dubai in April will qualify to compete in the Asian Championships. In the USA, the competition is growing too – with over 200 competitions to be held nationally next year.
Davos added: “We will expand to other countries across the Arab world and Indian subcontinent in the future. Each division has its own qualifying tournaments and a separate championship at the end of the school year.”

Ministry of Education Wins ‘Best m-Government Service’ Award

UAE, February 12, 2014 – The UAE Ministry of Education (MoE) has won the ‘Best m-Government Service’ Award in recognition of its innovative mobile application, Abnaai, which serves parents and their children who are studying in UAE-based government schools. Launched by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the award was given at the concluding session of the second annual UAE Government Summit.
The recognition aims to encourage government entities to provide creative and innovative solutions via smart phone applications and mobile phones for round-the-clock access by the public. The solutions must be easy to use and understand and properly working to surpass the public’s needs and expectations.
H.E. Humaid Mohammed Obeid Al Qutami, Minister of Education, highlighted the Ministry’s efforts to meet the Mobile Government project of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed. The endeavor aims to deliver government services to the public through mobile phones.
H.E. Al Qatami said that the award recognizes the efforts made by the Ministry and its employees. He further urged the Ministry to continue to provide world-class m-services and improve the quality of educational and learning services offered to all users.
In line with the award, H.E. Al Qatami responded that the continuous efforts to develop the country into a unique and smart government prompted the Ministry to be part of the UAE’s development initiatives, under the wise leadership of H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahayan, President of UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashed Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and the Ruler of Dubai, and members of the Supreme Council of the UAE.
H.E. Al Qatami said that the Ministry has made successful investments for its experienced and qualified employees to complete important tasks, especially those connected to the development of the education sector. He explained that the latter includes the educational system and its major elements along with specialized services offered by the Ministry to its clients.
H.E. Marwan Al Sawalih, the Ministry Undersecretary, said: “The Ministry of Education is keen on developing a fully integrated and comprehensive system based on modern compatible technologies present in today’s smart phone applications. Key features such as speed, accuracy and quality in serving clients – which include parents and students – are of particular focus. The content and public delivery of the Abnaai application depends on technological advancements in the fields of mass communication and smart devices. It is highly accurate and easy to use.”
The Ministry of Education’s investments into the digital world and smart devices developments will continue. The Ministry will push on with its roadmap to quality transformation with the aim of achieving the objectives of its development strategy along with the UAE Vision 2021.

Palm Utilities & Students ‘Lend Hands’ in Support of UAE’s World Expo 2020 Bid

UAE, October 12, 2013 – Palm Utilities (PU), a Dubai World company, has announced that it has invited 2,020 students from across the UAE to participate in a unique initiative to support the UAE’s World Expo 2020 bid.  Imprints of the student’s hands will be collectively displayed on a giant banner depicting the Dubai Expo 2020 logo.

It also highlights the huge public interest in supporting our bid to host the premier event. Dubai is one of four remaining cities contending to host the 2020 World Expo; the other candidates include São Paulo, Brazil; Izmir, Turkey; and Ekaterinburg, Russia. Paris-based Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) will go through the votes cast by its 167 member nations on November 27th to decide which city will host the expo.
